Since I live in a very old farmhouse and want to remodel it, I’ve been compiling a list and images of products I want to use. At the top of my list is soapstone for the countertops.
Soapstone is a natural, versatile non-porous stone that doesn’t stain; is heat resistant; chemically inert (not harmed by acidic materials); and is virtually maintenance free. The only downside to soapstone is that it ca be prone to nicks and dents because of its soft nature.
Soapstone is quarried in the Appalachian mountains as well as Brazil and Finland and the price ranges from $60-$105/square foot. Color variations vary from stone to stone but are predominantly blue/grayish.
