Designing Your Life
Have you ever met someone for the first time and immediately formed an opinion about them? You might think “this person dresses really well,” or “this person has great taste.” Whether we consciously mean to or not, we are all guilty of passing judgement (sometimes positive, sometimes negative). We form an opinion about them, and they form an opinion about us. First impressions only take 7 seconds. That means in those 7 seconds, they’ve automatically decided what kind of person we are, whether we like it or not. As alarming as that sounds, impressions and judgments are nothing more than branding. Branding is how you set yourself apart from others and how others view you. I’m going to share ways of how to brand yourself so that the world perceives you the way you want to be seen (because it’s going to happen whether you want it to or not). Essentially you are creating a brand by designing your life.
Brand Identity and Meaning
When we think of brand identity, usually we think of of logos, taglines, and typeface. But brand identity also relates to us personally. Every choice we make defines us and makes a statement, from the clothes we wear to the images we pin to the way we clean our home. We can influence those impressions made about us just by being aware that it’s happening.
How To Brand Yourself
Take a step back and try to evaluate yourself like someone else would. What would they see when they look at you? How would they describe you? Take a look at the way you dress. Take a look at your house. Try and evaluate everything critically from an outsider’s perspective. This is not about spending money–it’s how you present yourself to the world. Would people say you care? Would people say you don’t care? If you want to change the way the world views you, you’ve got to step outside yourself and take an honest hard look. It may not be easy, but it’s important to be aware of what’s happening. There are things you can do to influence how you are seen. You can do as little or as much as you want, but just remember, it’s going to happen.
Your Brand = Your Life
Be aware that judgments and impressions are going to be made regardless of whether you want them to or not
Realize that you do have some control over this by how you present yourself and your home
Try and evaluate everything critically like an outsider would so you can see what they see
Make whatever adjustments you want so you are presenting yourself how you want the world to see you
Understand that your brand is your life; make it whatever you want it to be!
