Summer Picnic With America’s Finest Hamper
Once upon a time there was a tiny little company in Iowa called The Burlington Basket Company. They made things like bassinets and picnic baskets out of woven wicker rattan. The Hawkeye picnic baskets (or hampers as they were called) were unique because they were refrigerator baskets containing a metal lining to keep perishables cold. These hampers became so popular that they were producing almost 10,000 a month to keep up with demand. Even movie stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood were using them. Although they are no longer made today, it’s still possible to find them on Ebay and Etsy. I found one in pretty decent condition a few months ago and plan on having a Summer picnic with America’s finest hamper!
Yesterday Vs. Today
Since everything in our modern culture today is super-sized, getting a vintage picnic hamper from the 1920’s puts thing in perspective. Hawkeye picnic baskets are smaller than what you would find today, but they’re well-made and still function perfectly! They’re also quite heavy!! I took mine up into the Wasatch Mountains on a family outing a few days ago and loved it! Not everyone is into vintage pieces like this, and that’s totally fine! I’m such an old-fashioned girl at heart that these types of things make me happy.
What are your thoughts on vintage antique pieces? Do you love them or hate them? I’d love to know what you think!
