Simple Pleasures of Life

I remember when I first got married.  My dad gave me some counsel along with a blessing that I still remember almost 20 years later.  In the prayer, he said it was my responsibility to make a wonderful home full of love with a good atmosphere.  It also needed to be a place where everyone could return after a day at school or work to find love, peace, harmony, and order to rejuvenate.  Creating a home full of love and order is one of the simple pleasures of life.

The Little Things

Life doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture.  Sometimes even the littlest of touches make a difference.  Last weekend we celebrated my daughter’s 19th birthday.  Since our children are past the age of having birthday parties, we have a family dinner instead.  We let Emily pick out her favorite food to eat as well as the cake of her choice.  We also let her pick out some balloons and a bouquet of flowers.  Then we set the table using our nicest linens, china, and flowers.  Of course there are cards and presents, but birthdays don’t have to cost a fortune.  Just making a little more effort and making the person feel special is what’s really important.

I love the quote by Laura Ingalls Wilder:  “It is the simple things of life that make living worthwhile, the sweet fundamental things such as love, duty, work and rest, living close to nature.”

What do you do to take pleasure in the simple things of life?
