There’s something very challenging and satisfying about taking images that inspire me and using that inspiration to create and design a 30 page magazine. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. How do you go about creating something from nothing but a feeling or a mood? It’s a process that they taught us in design school, but instead of designing a room or a house, I’m designing a monthly magazine. Whenever a new issue of Wilma comes out, I like to share the mood board I created that inspired the concept of the issue. The mood board shown above is for a January mood.
The Challenges of January
January is a challenging month for many reasons. The holidays are over, so there’s not much to look forward to. All the pretty holiday decorations have been taken down so there’s a void that needs to be filled. But there’s also something very special about January. It’s the most reflective time of the year when life is examined and goals and dreams are established. Because everything slows down, there’s time to plan, dream, and achieve.
Majesty Of Winter
There’s also a quiet beauty and stillness that falls over the earth in Winter when nature sleeps and dreams. The few signs of life are gathered and displayed in our homes to provide a little color and cheer during the long dark months. It’s what we cling to when we spend long hours longing for Spring. Wouldn’t you agree?
