The Sum Total Of Our Experiences
As I think about ways to make our home life better and more meaningful, I often think of my own mother and everything she did. Because my Dad had to travel a lot for work and be away for Church meetings, my Mom was often left alone to raise the five of us. Any of you single moms out there, or moms whose spouses are gone a lot, know how hard this is. Despite the circumstances, my mom still managed to make home life wonderful. It’s from my mother and father’s positive influence, shaping, and molding that I’m the person that I am today. Ever heard the quote, “We are the sum total of our experiences?”
“We are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.” –B.J. Neblett
Small Extra Steps
As a mother, I’ve noticed its the small things that can really make a difference in my family’s life. The other night my family and I were eating dinner and I hadn’t done anything “extra” to make the table look nice. There was no tablecloth, no candles, no flowers–just a plain boring table with dishes and food. It was kind of depressing, actually, coming off the holidays when everything was so pretty and decorated. I decided in that moment that from now on, I could take a couple extra minutes and make the table inviting and welcoming. It’s just one small extra step that makes a huge difference. It’s one small way I can shape and influence the home life of my children.
My Mother’s Influence
I know I’m not the only one who was blessed by the influence of my mother. A dear family friend calls my mom June (as in June Cleaver). Her positive and loving example touched everyone around her, and I’m so grateful I got to have her as a mother! If you missed out on October’s issue of Wilma Magazine, that issue is dedicated to my mother and her influence!
Have a great day!
