Whenever I find myself feeling down or in a bad mood, I challenge myself to create something beautiful. Sometimes it can be a pretty place setting like this one. Other times it can be spending time on a hobby or a project. The reason I do this is because if I redirect my attention from whatever’s bothering me to something positive and creative, it immediately lifts my mood.
This place setting is something that I made using items I found around my home. I wish I could take credit for the beautiful embroidered placemats, but I can’t. My Mom gave them to me for my birthday last year, and I’ve been looking for ways that I can use them. I focused on the colors in the placemats as the foundation and added the plates, glasses, flowers, silverware, and candlesticks that complemented them.
Not only does it help me to create something beautiful, but it helps my family as well. They appreciate the small simple touches that make something ordinary like setting the table into something special. As one of my idols said, “It belittles us to think of our daily tasks as small things, and if we continue to do so, it will in time make us small.” ~~Laura Ingalls Wilder
