A Day of Remembrance
I have two handsome and brave grandfathers who fought for our country during World War II. My paternal grandfather (Grandpa Hansen on the left) was part of the China Burma India Theatre and was stationed there while he worked as a mechanic on C-47 planes.
My maternal grandfather (Grandpa Simper on the right) was a radio operator as a Forward Observer for the Artillery. They were the soldiers at the front of the lines who would determine where the artillery should hit. If you’ve ever seen the movie, “Saving Private Ryan” you’ll remember the scene where the soldiers arrive on Landing Crafts (LST’s) to immediate machine gun fire–that was my grandfather. He never thought he would survive the war, but he did; Both of my grandfathers lived through the war and made it home to start families.
I feel so fortunate to have family members who have been in the military and have sacrificed so much so we can live in this country and enjoy our freedom.
As we celebrate the kick-off of Summer with the long holiday weekend, let’s remember those who have made it possible. God bless America!
