Have you ever thought back to a really challenging time in your life to see what coping mechanisms you used? When I was having my babies, it was a really hard time for me. I was 21 when I became pregnant with my oldest child, and I had three babies in four years. My husband at the time was in college and later medical school, no naturally he was gone all the time. We moved frequently because of school and training, and there were times when I was so lonely and depressed. Looking back now decades later, I can see how Martha got me through.
When I was pregnant with my second child, we were living in a small apartment next to the DFW airport in Irving, Texas. For all my pregnancies, I developed gestational depression so I was down all the time. Selfishly, the only thing I looked forward to was the short nap my toddler would take so I could have a few minutes to myself. It was during those glorious nap times that I religiously clung to Martha Stewart and her business. It wasn’t so much Martha Stewart herself, but the idea of this woman having the career that I wanted. I would print out recipes, projects, and crafts to do each day during nap times.
For some reason whenever Halloween comes around, I remember some of those projects and how they got me through a particularly challenging time in my life. Making homemade doughnuts, Halloween luminaries, and finger cookies doesn’t sound like much, but to me during that time, they were life-saving.
How about you? How did you cope during trying times?
