Aries, our four year old Siberian Husky, has been having quite the adventures living on the mountain. He’s definitely learning that he’s not the Alpha like he thought he was in our back yard. It’s a whole new world up here, and there are lots of different animals he’s encountering for the first time. Even though we’ve only been here a few weeks, I can probably write a book on Aries versus the squirrel and the moose.
There’s one particular squirrel that lives in a large pine tree in front of the cabin. He loves to taunt Aries and throw raw pine cones down on him. The little squirrel must realize that Aries is on a leash because he’s gotten quite brave running down the tree, and then back up it when Aries chases him. He sits on a tall branch and yells insults down at Aries knowing he has the advantage, and Aries can’t do anything about it. Poor Aries! It’s actually quite sad and humorous to watch at the same time.
Yesterday morning when I took Aries’ breakfast out to him, there was a baby moose eating leaves near Andy’s truck. Luckily Aries was smart enough not to try and attack him. He just laid there and watched him eat. Eventually the mama moose came to get her baby, and they ran off together. That’s when Aries decided he’d try and chase them (even though he didn’t get very far being on a leash). Eventually Aries will be a seasoned mountain dog, but in the meantime, the squirrel and moose are putting him his place.
