Our city dog, Aries, is having to learn a few difficult lessons as he transitions into a mountain dog. If you’re a regular reader of my blog, then you may remember the post from a few weeks ago about Aries versus the squirrel and the moose. This time, it’s Aries versus the porcupine, and again, he didn’t come out the winner.
We didn’t see it happen, but we imagine the porcupine and Aries encountered each other on the street at the top of our rental cabin. Aries, our curious dog, probably tried to sniff the porcupine and the porcupine didn’t want anything to do with him. We had just gotten into our hot tub about 9:30 PM when we noticed his face was filled with porcupine quills. Aries never barked, cried, or complained once so we’re not sure what time it happened. We immediately got out, and Andy tried to pull a few of them out with pliers, but it was too painful for Aries.
We ended up taking him to a Vet in South Salt Lake that was open for 24 hours. They sedated him and had to do a minor surgical procedure to get the ones out around his eye. We brought him home about 2 AM and put him to bed. He’ll be on an antibiotic and pain meds for the next few days, but he is doing better.
Somebody on the mountain told us that we’ll know if we have a stupid dog or a smart dog now. If he’s stupid, he’ll mess with the porcupine again, and if he’s smart, he’ll leave them alone. We hope he’s a smart dog and learned his lesson because none of us want to go through that again!
Until next time,
Have a great day!
